New on DVD & Blu-ray Disc: San Francisco Opera

The San Francisco Opera is one of the most prestigious opera companies in the world and also known for a remarkable history in media productions. In 2008, the Opera launched its digital cinema series of high-definition performances recorded live at the War Memorial Opera House; to date, 16 titles have been released. Regular broadcasts also returned to public television beginning in 2010. Since May 2013 the San Francisco Opera and EuroArts Music International are connected in an exclusive cooperation that includes the release and distribution of several productions on DVD and Blu-ray as well as in TV broadcasting, starting with the two top-notch titles Jake Heggie’s “Moby Dick” and Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucrezia Borgia”.

Jake Heggie’s “Moby Dick” brings Herman Melville’s epic tale of a fierce, obsessive whaling-boat captain who descends into madness and puts his crew in mortal danger to the stage. This thrilling production is featured by artists such as Jay Hunter Morris, Stephen Costello, Morgan Smith, Jonathan Lemalu and Talise Trevigne.

Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucrezia Borgia” tells the story of a notorious femme fatale renowned for her ruthless pursuit of power and how she reveals poignant vulnerability when she comes face to face with her long-lost son. This captivating and elegant production is starring Renée Fleming as Lucrezia Borgia in line with a top-notch cast: Michael Fabiano, Elizabeth DeShong und Vitalij Kowaljow, led by internationally acclaimed conductor Riccardo Frizza.

The Gershwins'®: “Porgy and Bess” will be released in March 2014.

Further releases in cooperation with the San Francisco Opera are planned for the course of 2014.
