The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is so unique because it is the only academy for young instrumentalists, conductors and composers anywhere in the world that is exclusively devoted to contemporary music. Every August and September since 2004, over 140 young and highly gifted musicians from all parts of the globe have been meeting here in Lucerne to immerse themselves, both theoretically and practically, in the repertory of the 20th and 21st centuries. Throughout the world, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY arouses special interest on account of the personality of its artistic director, Pierre Boulez. He is seconded in his efforts by important instrumentalists, composers and conductors like Peter Eötvös or musicians belonging to the Parisian Ensemble Intercontemporain. They join him as instructors to pass on their knowledge and expertise to the young musicians. One of Pierre Boulez’ central concerns in this connection is to devote himself not only to major 20th century works that have achieved classic status, but also to introduce and perform new and unknown works from the 21st century. On the one hand the documentary provides fascinating insights both on Pierre Boulez’ relationship with young musicians and on his style of working and conducting. Also, it casts light on the situation of so-called “new music” in present-day concert life and its significance for the young musicians and their careers.
The Film accompanies Pierre Boulez and selected participants of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY over a period of three years (2007 to 2009).
