Box: Baroque Operas

This box contains a collection of three masterpieces of Baroque Opera. Three geniuses of the kind, three dazzling productions with highly acclaimed artists. The production of Henry Purcell’s most famous opera ‘King Arthur’ revives in the Salzburg Festival 2004. Nikolaus Harnoncourt gathered a musical dream-team made up of his own orchestra and the best singers of the baroque scene, represented by Barbara Bonney, Isabel Rey, and Michael Schade. For Handel’s ‘Serse’, Christophe Rousset casted a female singer in the role of Xerxes, which was written for the soprano castrato Caffarelli. Paula Rasmussen is the star in this acclaimed production live from the Semperoper, Dresden, directed for stage by Michael Hampe. Lully’s ‘Persée’ was recorded live at the Elgin Theatre of Toronto in April 2004.The staging is a dazzling spectacle of gods and goddesses, dancing scenes, flying machines and monsters with fight scenes and special effects inspired by designs from the original 17th century performance.
