Ormandy conducts Stravinsky and Rachmaninov

The Philadelphia Orchestra
Eugene Ormandy

Eugene Ormandy’s unbroken forty-two-year association with the Philadelphia Orchestra was unique in history. Famous for its rich and powerful "Philly Sound”, the orchestra was described by Rachmaninov as “the greatest virtuoso orchestra in the world”. Ormandy was a close friend of the composer, and it was to celebrate the conductor’s eightieth birthday that they performed Rachmaninov’s magnificent and powerful Second Symphony, a performance whose authenticity would be difficult to beat.

Repertoire

Igor Stravinsky: The Firebird – Concert Suite for orchestra No. 2 (1919); Sergei Rachmaninov: Symphony No.2 in E minor, op.27
