The Berliner Jazztage are among the oldest and most prestigious jazz festivals in Europe. The festival was founded in 1974. In 1969, to mark Duke Ellington’s 70th birthday, the Jazztage invited a phalanx of the greatest jazz stars to Berlin. Among them were Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Lionel Hampton, and many others. The highlight of the festival was a concert with Duke Ellington and his band at the legendary Berliner Philharmonie.
