Brahms: Sonatas for Cello and Piano
In a recording from the Faber Castell Castle in Stein near Nuremberg, Zoltan Kocsis and Miklos Perenyi, two Hungarian interpreters, play Johannes Brahms' Sonata No. 1 in E minor opus 38 for piano and violoncello.
The career of Zoltan Kocsis, born in 1952, began when he won two important piano competitions in his home country. In 1975, he stood in for Maurizio Pollini at the Sviatoslav Richter Festival in Tours and shortly afterwards performed several duo piano recitals with his mentor Richter. Touring trips then quickly took him all over the world. A critic for the Boston Times once described him as "a devilishly original pianist". Miklos Perenyi, born in 1948 in Budapest, was already considered a "star" when he was seven years old. He was admitted to the Budapest Academy of Music as a violoncellist due to his exceptional talent. In 1962 he received his diploma as a violoncellist from the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome and gave his diploma concert at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1964. At the invitation of Pablo Casals, he regularly took part in his master classes from 1965 onwards. Guest performances have taken him to all the important musical centres of Europe.
