Fabio Luisi conducts the DNSO: Scriabin and Brahms
The Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen's Two Lieder is dedicated to violinist Christina Åstrand. Herbstlied and Liebeslied are both transformations of Abrahamsen's own music – he often works with rediscoveries of his own pieces, which are transformed into new incarnations.
The Danish National Symphony Orchestra and Fabio Luisi then perform Scriabin's bubbling Poème de l'extase, which describes love and eroticism as the path to the divine.
Brahms' melancholic and longing masterpiece – the Symphony No. 3 – is music from the height of his creative powers. It carries the motto "Frei, aber froh" which was a very personal statement for Brahms. He cherished his freedom as an artist, but the joy was dearly bought, for with individual freedom came loneliness.
Abrahamsen: Two lieder for violin;
Scriabin: The poem of ecstasy, Op. 54;
Brahms: Symphony No. 3
