Collegium 1704: EROICA
Beethoven's Third Eroica Symphony, considered to be the very first symphony of Romanticism, is famous for the circumstances of its original dedication to Napoleon. The Eroica was ahead of its time and radically prefigured future developments in the symphonic genre. Pavel Vranický (Paul Wranitzky) worked closely with Beethoven and was an influential figure in Viennese musical life at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A much sought-after conductor, he wrote over 50 symphonies, many of which bear a programme name. Tempesta owes its name to the evocative description of a storm in the third movement.
Mozart: Overture Titus “La clemenza di Tito”; Vranicky: Symphony in D minor “La Tempesta”; Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major “Eroica”
