Fifty years after the death of Dmitri Shostakovich, the 2025 Verbier Festival pays tribute to the composer’s extraordinary legacy with a chamber concert of rare distinction. A stellar ensemble — Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Mischa Maisky, Antoine Tamestit, and the Ébène Quartet — explores four works spanning Shostakovich’s career, revealing his deep engagement with both personal expression and the pressures of Soviet society. The program opens with the lyrical Cello Sonata in D minor, composed before Shostakovich fell out of favor, and moves through the emotionally rich Piano Quintet in G minor and the introspective Sonata for Viola and Piano. The Concertino for Two Pianos, written for his son, offers a lighter, playful contrast, highlighting the composer’s wit and humanity alongside his more profound reflections.
