Musica Serena: The Composer Peteris Vasks

To be a composer means to share joy, love and emotions about the possibility to find harmony at least in music, says the internationally renowned Latvian composer Peteris Vasks. In 2016 he celebrates his 70th birthday. The documentary reveals the life story of the composer, from his beginnings in former Soviet Russia, and tells how creative energy transforms into music filled with pain, suffering, feelings of love and beauty and longing for harmony in the modern world. The documentary Musica Serena reflects a period in the composer‘s life, beginning with creation of the composition and concluding with its first performance in Kokkola, Finland, conducted by Juha Kangas, a close friend of Peteris Vasks. The film allows us to take a look into the composer‘s study, touch the wonder of creation of music and discover the sources of inspiration for the music by Peteris Vasks: the marvelous nature of Latvia, childhood in the family of a pastor in Soviet times and the endless joie de vivre present in every moment.
