Pappano, Argerich, Maisky from Santa Cecilia Rome
Classical music is often thought of as being austere, ponderous and stern, yet there are examples that were explicitly intended to be the exact opposite. Carnival of the animals is one of those compositions. Regarded as being plain fun by Saint-Saëns himself, this work is often underestimated as a piece for children.
Furthermore conductor Antonio Pappano, pianist Martha Argerich and Mischa Maisky on the cello play famous pieces by Leclair, Schumann and Shostakovich.
Leclair: Sonata for 2 violins in E minor, Op. 3 No. 5; Schumann: Fantasy Pieces for Violoncello and Piano, Op.73; Shostakovich: Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Op. 40; Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals
