Europakonzert 2020 from Berlin
The annual EUROPAKONZERT takes place as usual on May 1st with a very special setting this year. 15 musicians from the orchestra, maestro Kirill Petrenko and soprano Christiane Karg enchant the audience in front of their TV sets from the musical heart of Berlin, the Philharmonie. Since 1991, the Berliner Philharmoniker have celebrated the day of their founding on 1 May with the EUROPAKONZERT in a location of historical significance. This year, the television concert was originally intended to take place in Tel Aviv as a prelude to a major European tour. Due to the worldwide corona pandemic, the entire tour had to be postponed.
Under the utmost precaution, the Berliner Philharmoniker have managed at short notice to arrange to show the concert as a live broadcast from the Philharmonie Berlin. For this symbolic concert, to encourage and to thank people in Europe and worldwide, a very comforting programme has been selected.
Arvo Pärt: Fratres for string orchestra and percussion
György Ligeti: Ramifications for string orchestra
Samuel Barber: Adagio for Strings
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 4 (Erwin Stein arrangement)
