First Steps

William Christie

Chosen amongst students from the major European music academies - Paris, Lyon, The Hague, London, Trossingen - brought together in 1998 by the Ambronay European Baroque Academy, ninety young musicians worked for many weeks with William Christie in order to recreate «Theseus», a work by Jean-Baptiste Lully dating back to 1675. This two-part documentary shows the staging of an opera that has not been performed for over two centuries. Being an enthusiastic teacher, Christie recreates a baroque stylistic unity worthy of professional opera companies. The fliming of the complete performance of «Theseus» attests to the great achievement of these young musicians.
