Classic Archive 006 - Hephzibah Menuhin
This episode of Classic Archive is devoted to pianist Hephzibah Menuhin: Yehudi’s younger sister. It was no easy task to make a name for herself in the shadow of such a prestigious brother. Yet, Hephzibah managed to find her way, championed by conductor Pierre Monteux and supported by Georges Enesco’s insistence. We can listen to her technical precision and lack of pathos in the Variations Sérieuses by Mendelssohn, Cesar Franck’s Sonata for piano and violin and Franz Schubert’s Valses Nobles. These archival recordings were filmed in Paris and London during the sixties. We can hear the specificity of their organic duo. This brother and sister relationship was an ideal one: freed from any kind of competition.
Felix Mendelssohn: Variations Sérieuses, Op. 54; Cesar Franck: Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major; Franz Schubert: Valses Nobles, Op. 77
