Arrigo Boito's only finished and preserved opera, Mefistofele, recorded in Baden-Baden was praised by critics and loved by the audience - a very rare concurrence. And this could hardly have come as a surprise, since it was no other than Erwin Schrott, who had already given a taste of his excellence as the Mefistofele in Gounod’s Faust opera as a mixture of Latin lover, prankster and demon. Arrigo Boito combines influences of Verdi and Wagner in his musical work: rousing choirs, intricate melodies accompanied by music that is almost cinematic in intent – an intoxicating mix that audiences around the globe will find unforgettable. A new discovery!
